What is the Vagina?

The vulva is the name for the external genitals you can see on the outside of the body. It’s the guardian to the internal canal (the vagina) and a powerhouse of sensation and function. Let’s give credit where it’s due!

Key Features of the Vulva:

  • The Labia (Inner and Outer Lips): These folds of skin protect the vaginal opening. Just like snowflakes, every set of labia is unique—they come in all shapes, sizes, colours, and textures. Some are long, some are short, some are asymmetrical—and that’s all completely normal and fabulous.
  • The Clitoris: This small but powerful organ is the only part of the human body dedicated solely to pleasure. The little nub you can see at the top of the vulva is just the tip of the iceberg—it has internal legs that extend back into the body, packed with over 8,000 nerve endings.
  • The Clitoral Hood: A protective fold of skin covering the glans (the sensitive tip) of the clitoris.
  • The Vaginal Opening (Introitus): The entrance to the vaginal canal. Its appearance is unique to every person…and this is where the tampon is used.
  • The Urethral Opening: The tiny hole below the clitoris where urine leaves the body.
  • The Mons Pubis: The soft mound of fatty tissue above the pubic bone, covered with pubic hair after puberty, which provides cushioning and protection.

Why It Matters: Understanding your vulva helps you appreciate your body and empowers you to take charge of your health. Knowing what your unique landscape looks like—its usual lumps, bumps, and colours—helps you notice if anything changes.

Self-Care is Key: Keep up with gentle hygiene (warm water is usually enough!) and pay attention to any changes in your body. If something feels off, like unusual itching or soreness, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider.

Embrace your anatomy with confidence! Knowing more about your vulva—not just your vagina—helps you love and respect your entire body even more.

You’re fabulous just as you are!
